Become a "Principal to Watch!"
Free training opportunity for middle school principals in Los Angeles County

Are you the principal of a middle school within Los Angeles County?

  • Do 40% or more of your students qualify for free or reduced-price meals?
  • Do you want to increase achievement for all your students?

If you answered "yes" to all three questions, you qualify to participate in a, free certification program to become a "Principal to Watch."

Offered by the California League of Middle Schools and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles, the Principals to Watch Academy is a pilot program designed to give principals proven, research-based tools and strategies for raising student achievement site-wide.

In a series of eight sessions from August 2008 through March 2009, Dr. Irvin Howard, program director for the statewide Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage program, will:

  1. Teach you the research-based criteria of the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform used in the national and state Schools to Watch programs
  2. Guide you step-by-step through a school-wide assessment and the development of a three-year school improvement plan

You will also:

  • Tour up to four Schools to Watch-Taking Center Stage model middle schools in L.A. County
  • Get FREE conference registration to the CLMS Annual Conference in San Diego, March 12-15, 2009
  • Network with 21 Schools to Watch principals at the conference
  • Receive a certification plaque and a congratulatory letter to your superintendent upon completion of the program

The session dates are:

  • September 19, September 20, October 23 and
    November 13 of 2008
  • January 8, March 14 and March 21 of 2009
